An Inconvenient Truth (2006)

Published by Jay under Documentary,Movies,Recommended

Starring Al Gore Directed by David Guggenheim Rated PG for mild thematic elements Ever seen a documentary that scared the crap out of you?  As you probably heard, this is most just a slideshow of Al Gore talking about global warming, yet it was extremely interesting.  The evidence he presents is so overwhelming and the scope [...]

16 Blocks (2006)

Published by Jay under Action,Movies,Suspense

Starring Bruce Willis, Mos Def, and David Morse Directed by Richard Donner (of Lethal Weapon fame) Rated PG-13 for violence and language I usually like this kind of film: action, a bit of a mystery to unravel, and Bruce Willis as a cop.  This one wasn’t bad… it just wasn’t great.  David Morse was good [...]

Over The Hedge (2006)

Published by Jay under Animated,Family,Movies

Starring the voices of Garry Shandling, Bruce Willis, William Shatner, Steve Carrell, and Wanda Sykes Directed by Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick Rated PG for rude humor and mild comic action It really seemed like I should have really liked this movie.  It’s got a great voice cast, was made by Dreamworks (who also made Shrek), [...]

Starring Tom Cruise and Ken Watanbe Directed by Edward Zwick Rated R for strong violence and battle sequences There are just some movies that you know are quality movies that you need to see sometime in your life.  You know, movies that have historical significance, that make you think, that are well acted, that are [...]

She’s The Man (2006)

Published by Jay under Comedy,Movies

Starring Amanda Bynes Directed by Andy Fickman Rated PG-13 for some sexual humor I saw this one at the recommendation of some of my students.  Before seeing it, I said “there’s no way that movie can be any good.”  They told me to give it a chance.  The previews made it look like the soccer-ball-hitting-the-crotch-of-the-girl-pretending-to-be-a-boy [...]

Akeelah and the Bee (2006)

Published by Jay under Drama,Family,Movies

Starring Keke Palmer, Laurence Fishburne, and Angela Bassett Directed by Doug Atchison Rated PG Now here’s a good family picture that I thought I would like and I did.  The story was predictible but just the kind of underdog winner movie I like.  The acting by the adults was good (other than Booger from Revenge [...]

Lucky Number Slevin (2006)

Published by Jay under Drama,Movies

Starring Josh Hartnett, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley, and Lucy Liu Directed by Paul McGuigan Rated R for language and sexuality Everybody says this is a Tarrantino-wannabe film.  You don’t really unravel what’s happening until the end — and that’s the strength of the film.  The acting is fine and there are some interesting [...]

The Benchwarmers (2006)

Published by Jay under Comedy,Movies

Starring Rob Schneider, David Spade, Jon Heder Directed by Dennis Dugan Rated PG-13 Check out that list of thespians!  Let’s make this brief: the story is predictable and the acting is poor, but there’s just enough heart in this one to make it enjoyable.  If you just take the movie for the fluff it is, [...]

The DaVinci Code (2006)

Published by Jay under Movies,Suspense

Starring Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou Directed by Ron Howard Rated PG-13 for disturbing images Great story, great actors, great director, average movie.  I listened to the audiobook and loved it and couldn’t wait for the movie.  It seemed to follow the book pretty closely and was interesting, but never great.  Am I glad I saw [...]

Totally Awesome (2006)

Published by Jay under Comedy,Movies

Starring Tracy Morgan and Chris Kattan This one was on VH-1 and was intended to make fun of 80′s movies like Footloose, Pretty In Pink, and Dirty Dancing.  Generally stupid, but a few laughs. Grade: C+
